Quick fixes
I’ve paid, but the countdown is back
Tap the countdown at the top of the screen, go through the parent check and tap “Restore purchases” at the bottom of the purchase screen. Use the same Apple Account or Google Account you bought with. A day pass ends 24 hours after you bought it and can’t be restored, so the countdown coming back after that is expected. If the child lock is on, unlock it first. If none of this helps, email mail@simengjermundsen.com and say roughly when you paid.
The videos are missing
The videos download in the background, and only on Wi-Fi. Connect to Wi-Fi, open the app and leave it open for a while. After that they work offline too. Until then, the app shows the photos and sounds built into it.
My child keeps leaving autoplay
While autoplay is running, a switch sits in the bottom right-hand corner. Slide it more than halfway to the right, and taps on the screen do nothing. For even more control, use Guided Access on iPhone and iPad (Settings › Accessibility › Guided Access). On Android you can pin the app: search Settings for “pin” (it’s called App pinning or Pin app, depending on the phone).
Cancelling a subscription
iPhone and iPad: Settings › your name › Subscriptions › The Kids App › Cancel Subscription. Mac: App Store › your name › your name › Subscriptions › The Kids App › Cancel Subscription. Android: Google Play › profile icon › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions › The Kids App › Cancel subscription. Deleting the app doesn’t cancel a subscription. You keep access until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
Refunds
Bought on iPhone, iPad or Mac: ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. Bought on Android: use Google Play’s refund page, or email mail@simengjermundsen.com and we’ll help.
The app is in the wrong language
The parent check and the purchase screen follow the device language: Norwegian if the device is in Norwegian, otherwise English. The child’s part of the app has no text.
Common questions
What age is it for?
It’s made for little ones up to about five. There’s nothing to read and no wrong way to tap. Norway’s Directorate of Health advises that children under two avoid screens, that children aged two to five spend no more than 30–60 minutes a day on them, and that young children use screens together with an adult. The Kids App is made to be a good choice for when the screen comes out anyway.
Is any of the content made with AI?
No. The videos were filmed and the photos taken in the real world, the sounds were properly recorded, and the icons were drawn by illustrators.
Which devices does it work on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 16.4 or later, Android phones and tablets with Android 7.0 or later, and Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later).
Does it need the internet?
No. The whole app works offline—on the plane, in the car, at the cabin. The videos download in the background the first time the app is on Wi-Fi, and after that everything is there.
Does it work on a plane?
Yes. The whole app works offline. Open it on Wi-Fi at home before you go, so the videos are downloaded and ready.
Can my child buy something by accident?
It’s designed not to happen. Before anything can be bought, someone has to hold a finger on an answer for two seconds, and then hold the buy button for two seconds. After that, the purchase has to be confirmed in the App Store or Google Play, like any other purchase. For extra peace of mind, set your store to ask for Face ID, a fingerprint or a password for every purchase.
What does it cost?
The app is free to download, and all the content is open. In the free version, a countdown leads to a parent check: first after three minutes, then more and more often. To remove it, choose a day pass (NOK 9), a monthly subscription (NOK 39 a month), a yearly subscription (NOK 249 a year) or Forever, a one-off purchase (NOK 499). Prices are from the Norwegian App Store. See pricing.
What happens when the countdown runs out?
A parent check appears—the screen called “For the grown-up”. Hold a finger on one of the answers for two seconds to reach the purchase screen. There you can buy, or tap “Not now” to keep playing a little longer. The first comes after three minutes; after that they come more and more often, down to every 30 seconds.
What does the app know about my child?
Nothing that can identify your child. The app has no accounts and never asks for a name, email address or photo. What it remembers, such as which things are opened most, stays on the device. Read more in the privacy policy.
Deleting your data
The app has no accounts. What it remembers is stored on the device and deleted when you delete the app. Purchase records are kept by Apple or Google and by RevenueCat, the service we use to check purchases, so that purchases can be restored. To have the RevenueCat record deleted, email mail@simengjermundsen.com with the order number from your Apple or Google receipt so we can find the right record.
