Tap the cow. Hear a real cow.
The Kids App is a calm wall of tiles for little ones. Tap a tile, and real photos and video fill the screen—with real sound. A cow in a meadow, a lion in the jungle, a fire engine in New York. No reading, no menus and no ads.

For when the screen comes out anyway.
Norway’s Directorate of Health advises parents to choose content that’s ad-free and suits the child’s age, and to avoid endless streams of short videos. The Kids App is built with that in mind: no ads, no feed and no recommendations. Even autoplay stays with the twelve things in one world.
The advice is no screens under two, and at most 30–60 minutes a day from two to five, ideally together with an adult. Sit together if you can, and say the words out loud: “there’s the cow”, “listen, a fire engine”.

The Kids App started in 2019, when Simen Øian Gjermundsen wanted something calm and ad-free for his own child. In 2026 he rebuilt the app from scratch. There’s no investor and no ad network behind it—just one dad who reads and answers every support email himself.
Questions parents ask.
What age is it for?
It’s made for little ones up to about five. There’s nothing to read and no wrong way to tap. Norway’s Directorate of Health advises that children under two avoid screens, that children aged two to five spend no more than 30–60 minutes a day on them, and that young children use screens together with an adult. The Kids App is made to be a good choice for when the screen comes out anyway.
Is any of the content made with AI?
No. The videos were filmed and the photos taken in the real world, the sounds were properly recorded, and the icons were drawn by illustrators.
Does it need the internet?
No, not to get started. Each of the 144 things has a photo built into the app, and most have a sound too, so your child can tap everything without a connection. The videos and extra photos need the internet: videos download in the background on Wi-Fi and play when the app has been opened with a connection, and extra photos load whenever there’s a connection.
Can my child buy something by accident?
It’s designed not to happen. Before anything can be bought, someone has to hold a finger on an answer for two seconds, and then hold the buy button for two seconds. After that, the purchase has to be confirmed in the App Store or Google Play, like any other purchase. For extra peace of mind, set your store to ask for Face ID, a fingerprint or a password for every purchase.
What does it cost?
The app is free to download, and all the content is open. In the free version, a countdown leads to a parent check: first after three minutes, then more and more often. To remove it, choose a day pass (NOK 9), a monthly subscription (NOK 39 a month), a yearly subscription (NOK 249 a year) or Forever, a one-off purchase (NOK 499). Prices are from the Norwegian App Store. See pricing.
Which devices does it work on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 16.4 or later, Android phones and tablets with Android 7.0 or later, and Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later).
Ready for the first tap.
Free to download for iPhone, iPad and Android. All the content is open from day one.
